Louisville Truck Show

Louisville Truck Show

I made it to the truck show in Louisville, Kentucky Saturday. Shelly got to see inside the trucks and she loved them. I did have to break the bad news to her that we weren’t going to have one with a bath and showers and kitchen.

I spent much of my time talking to recruiters and getting information and applications. Today I was busy filling them out and getting them faxed. I hope that every one of these companies don’t contact my former employers for reference. They are going to get tired of that. I have applied to about 20 companies.

Day 18

Day 18

I didn’t do so well today. I was tired and my concentration wasn’t very good. I haven’t slept very well this week and feeling down about the trucking jobs. The recruiters didn’t make me feel too excited about the prospects either. Last night I got home late and then worked on laying son on my yard. I didn’t get finished till 10:00 and I got up at 4:00.

We took the Peterbuilt on the road pulling a trailer. I was nervous and missed gears down shifting and my mind was just not getting it. I am glad that tomorrow we are not driving. It is the first time that I had rather be in the class room taking a test than to be in the truck driving. It’s not a permanent thing but we have been in the trucks all week so I am ready for a break. I should be much better on Monday.

The other part of my stress this week has been the anxiety of getting a job. I am sure that I am overly concerned about it. I have to develop more of not giving a shit attitude. Eff you if you don’t want me, someone else will.

Half Way

I am sorry that I haven’t been keeping blog posted more regularly. I know that I have disappointed the thousands of fans that read this everyday (Forget the hit counter, it obviously isn’t correct).

We are more than half way through our training. We are spending a good proportion of our time in the trucks. It is going well although it does get frustrating trying to get the backing, gear shifting excreta all working right but progress is being made.

We had recruiters Monday and I believe that we are to have more Friday. That has been educational also. I have filled out several applications. I plan on applying to any company that I believe that I would be even remotely being interested in driving for. In the end I will make my choice from the pre-hires that I get.

One of the former students stopped by the field with his truck. He has only been for about 4 months. He was excited about driving. I believe that it was encouraging to everyone. He had a pretty nice truck.

Easter Weekend

Saturday, March 22, 2008

We are out for of school for Good Friday so we had a 4 day week. I am not patience enough to be taking these days off. I want to get started driving.

Speaking of driving we have been up-shifting and down-shifting and doing gear recovers. I guess that I am doing okay if I compare myself with where the others are but I am never satisfied with my progress or when I don’t get it right. I wish that I could get more time in the trucks and get better at doing it all. But the other students think that they should get their time also.

The class room time is a waste. I don’t mean that it shouldn’t be done or that it isn’t necessary. But that there should be a better way to do it than to spend so much time in the class room when the studying part could have been completed before I ever got to school. With the internet the knowledge part could be studied online using an interactive program that would take you through the same lessons and test that we are now doing in a class room. There are some online CDL study and test sites so why aren’t schools using them or something similar so that the class room part can be completed before entering the physical school. It would make the instructors time more efficient.

Day 12

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

We spend the day doing backing maneuvers. I enjoy being in the trucks although it gets frustrating when it doesn’t go the way I would like. But I am rather satisfied with my progress.

Also the instructor has started a blog for the graduates of TTC@ Nashville Truck Driving School.

Sprink Break

Spring Break

Yes that’s right, spring break. I guess that is what you get when you are go to a state school alone with all the other bull and waste of time that our school system entails. Over all I believe that we get good training but it could be done more efficiently. Of course I have been in industry my entire career and they have some goals of being efficient even if it isn’t achieved. I can use the time off to get some stuff done that I need done before I finish with school and get on the road.

We got our March snow Friday night and Saturday my wife had me a 60th birthday party even though my birthday isn’t till Monday. It went really good and I had a good time.

At school we have been practicing parallel parking and shifting gears. I have done really well on everything except the parallel parking. I still have work to do on it and I didn’t get the time that I wanted to practice. I am not concerned about being able to learn it. I am doing as well as anyone in class but I am nowhere close to doing it right.

This week while I am off I am going to study the pre-trip. I know it pretty well but I am afraid that on test that I will forget something. I want to have that down good. The driving part I not too concerned about.

Finished First Week of School

I have finished the first week of school. It has been very enjoyable. The school is well equipped and the instructors take a lot of pride in teaching the students. I haven’t been to any other school to compare it with but I would certainly recommend this one.

Thursday we got in the trucks and drove forward in first gear and the backed them across the yard. I personally had no problems with it. I have driven enough vehicles pulling trailers that I knew what to look for. That doesn’t mean that I will do well in other situations but I do feel that I have an advantage over some of my class mates. I am looking forward to next week and getting more drive time.
