Dieting 3 Weeks
I have been dieting for three weeks and have lost 14 lbs. This week I lost 4 lbs. I have eaten more than I should have during the week but got back on track by the weekend. Usually the weekends are the hardest but I wasn’t where I wanted to be so I got serious. Dieting sucks. There is now way around it. It Sucks! I have a long way to go yet. I am now down to 201. I haven’t broken the 200 mark yet. I can’t complain about the weight that I have lost so I try not to get discouraged or think about it. I have been limiting my meals to small portions that leave me hungry but after I have eaten it goes away after a while and I manage. Have you ever noticed the commercials for food on TV at night? That is after they have run all of the dieting commercials. I hope these SOB’s all die of obesity related diseases.
It is less that a month before I start school. Next Friday I go for orientation. It’s getting real now. Not much time before I make a big life change.

Couch Surfing
I found this interesting but it is probable isn’t for everyone. I have added links to my blog for anyone that wants to check it out. I haven’t used it yet except to contact some people in place that I plan on visiting and have been very happy with what I have found. The other link is for hostels and I have used them and enjoyed it. I have stayed in light houses on the coast of California. I find it a neat experience but again I am sure that it isn’t for everyone. You have be up for the adventure. But I enjoy sky diving.

A Failure to Communicate

A Failure to Communicate
We have the worse communication. No wonder that we are losing business. As I had stated before one of the first orders of business for me at this company was to set up procedures that documented our work orders excreta. It was then decided not to implement it because it actually held people responsible, including the owners family, for their actions. Since they view themselves as gods and they can do as they dam well please they will not be held responsible for their own action. That is what they own employees for, to take the blame. I am not good at taking blame for something that I have no control over and I don’t keep my mouth shut.
The issue:
I designed two parts for Batesville Casket Company for developing a new way to install theses parts that will save Batesville money. The reasoning by our company is that if we can show them that this will work then Batesville will buy off on it and give us the contract to produce them. The job has the potential of one million dollars plus a year business. So I built a prototype tools to produce the samples.
The tool was built oversize because the plastic part shrinks as it cools. The tools were build with this shrink factor. The parts worked as planed and everyone should be happy. As I said should be. But you can’t make these people happy.
The Problem: Now we want to get an aluminum cast tool to go into production. We produce a pattern for the foundry to cast the production tool. The pattern needs to be larger to compensate for the shrink of the aluminum in their casting process. The owner wants to know why these prototype tooling wasn’t made to a pattern size. Sometimes we do this when the prototypes can be oversize of the production parts but in this case we needed to prove fits and concepts. The owner himself says to do it as a prototype tool and that is what I did. He said it with witnesses and they backed me up. That made him angrier to be told that he was wrong.
So now we are in a mad rush to get these tools changed to get to the foundry. They are expected to be shipped by Friday. Now I need 2-3 days to re-machine them and then they go to the tool room to finish and they need 2-3 days. This is Wednesday and they are still sitting in the press. It is up to the owner’s son (the plant manager) to get them pulled so that I can work on them. So little god can not chew gun and walk at the same time and he is tied up with something else. He isn’t even the one that has to pull it, just tell the set-up Mexican to do it.
Now I have been waiting for it to get out of the press so that I can work on it. When it is then they will try to hold me responsible for it not being on time. If we simply had followed the procedures that had been laid out then there would not have been this failure to communicate.
Competing against the world and with all the other issues of doing business today is very difficult and requires professionals and good communications. We just don’t have either.

The Economy
I have one month before I start truck driving school. With the way the economy is going I am anxious about the future.
I have been listing to some the right wing radio talk shows and they say that the democrats are causing this problem by predicting it. Give me a break! The media reporting the slowing down of the economy probable helps slow it down. The stock market is very much based on perception and therefore the reporting of it contributes to the panic. But the bad economy can not be blamed on the media alone. If we were in a strong economy then they would not have the bad news to report. The fact lies in that when we are paying $3.00 plus a gallon for gas the money spent for fuel is not used to purchase products and services that fuel the economy. It is inevitable that something has to give. If your income is in the upper 6 figures then it may not have the same affect on your lifestyle. But when a family is living paycheck to paycheck as many Americans are, then spending has to be cut back. It hasn’t been the driving. We still need to drive to work and do many of the things that we have become accustom to. I am afraid that we are in for some hard times. I hope that I am wrong and that something positive will happen before we get a snowball affect in out economy.

Cashless Restaurant

Cashless Restaurant
The first cashless restaurant that I am aware of is reopening this week. After a robber shot and killed one of the employees the restaurant is no longer accepting cash. I believe that is only the beginning of many to follow. With events such as this it is only a matter of time before we will be a complete cashless sociality. Also we have the technology and our acceptance of the use of credit and debit cards we are at a place in our history where it becomes a practical matter to have a cashless sociality. There are a lot of arguments for it. It can control robberies such as this, control illegal drugs, help control terrorists, and eliminate the underground economy that no taxes are being paid on. No one is going to stick you up and rob you of your debit card; or maybe they will. But with resent events enacted such as the Real ID Act we can start having our information implanted. I personally don’t like what is happening. If you believe in the mark of the beast or big brother then you have cause to be concerned. A few events can quickly put us there.
To a lighter note: I lost another 5 lbs this week. Two weeks on the diet and I have lost 10 lbs. Current weight 205.

Undocumented Workers
Our politicians are referring to the illegal aliens as undocumented workers. Is that the same as calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist? I believe that if someone comes illegally into this country then he should be treated as a criminal and be deported.
Today was very slow at work. None of our Mexicans worked today. We can not get much slower and stay in business.

Hawaii Truck Driving
A big part of my decision to drive a truck is for the adventure of seeing the country. As I have previously stated that I have visited 44 states and I want to see all 50. So why not let someone else provides the motor home (so I am pulling a trailer with it) and they pay for the fuel and I get paid for my time traveling. It makes prefect sense to me.
I have been checking on truck driving jobs in Hawaii. I have found some jobs that are advertized but not many. I know from past experience that companies in Hawaii don’t like to hire anyone that is not living there. I guess that it is the same with truck driving jobs.
Truck driving in Hawaii sounds exciting. It would be a good way to see the state. Housing there is expensive so I would like to get an OTR job. The problem is you don’t have much distance to drive so I don’t know how practical that is. They are some that are advertized.
If anyone has any knowledge about truck driving in Hawaii I would love to here from you.

Diet Update
As of Sunday I have been on my diet 1 week. I lost 5 lbs. I am down from 215 down to 210. My goal is 177. I am pleased with the way things have gone so far. It has not been too difficult to stay on it. The weekend was the hardest.
My mood has been really down since Sunday but it has nothing to do with the diet. I am just in a bad mood. I usually don’t stay this way very long. I guess I am a little anxious to get started with the school. I have been waiting for a long time and things here at work are just not going well. We are so slow that something has got to happen soon.

Real ID Bill

Real ID Bill
Real ID in a nutshell is that your driver licenses or ID card will have a chip that can be read your personal information such as your name, addressee, digital picture, birth date, excreta. When you are ready to renew your license be ready to prove who you are. You will need to have your Social Security card, a certified copy of your birth certificate and other documentation to get or renew them no matter how long you have had them.
What you can and can not do without it: Whatever that list may be today it is likely to grow in the “can’t do category” as it gets implemented. It is already more involved than meets the eye. It will be required to board planes and go into federal buildings. That much is being reveled. Not doing these is only a minor inconvenient for many people. But it is also including many state and county buildings, checking accounts, and other financial concerns. If you have open a bank account recently you have learned that it require complying with the Homeland Security Information requirements. Also some states are already indicating on your license whither you have had a DUI charge by putting your picture on sideways. Of course any criminal, drugs, child support, and DUI history will be included. This all may sound okay to you but it is only one step in the government containing complete control.
We are all familiar with the GPS in cell phone and facial recognition software. We are also videotaped several times a day (8 times a day according to some). With the technology we have today by scanning our ID even while it is in our pockets they can now track our movements. Our ID will be put linked the video. Is this being paranoid? No I think so, I believe it is reality. You may think that it will not affect you if you don’t have anything to hide. Great until the government passes something that you don’t agree with and now you are on the wrong side.
Security: There is none. I know that is not what they say but if it is in a computer or on your ID then it is available to people that we would not want to have it. Some examples are we just had 2 lap top computers stolen in Nashville that contained the SS numbers excreta or all the voters in Davidson County (330,000). Next government and financial sites are constancy being compromised. Also I personally know of police in south Florida that runs a business of providing personal information retrieved from the FBI computers to car lots and such to aid in the recovery of property. They charge $150.00 for about 5 minutes of work. It shows your family, friends, SS numbers and more. By chasing your family and friends they can find out a lot about you. It is common practice for bill collectors to call neighbors and get them to go knock on your door or visually check to see if their vehicle is parked in your driveway. Again this may be okay with you but what happens when someone has cut you off in traffic and decides to take it to your home. The security possibilities are endless.
Before you decide that this is being unfounded paranoid, then do your own research on what is happing with this Real ID Act. I don’t believe that we can change it but you can be guaranteed that it will come back to bite you.

Tomatoes and Cheap Labor
I didn't write this but if you have been reading my blogs you have an insight into my feeling about illegal immigration. I do agree with what the writer has said here.
CHEAP TOMATOES?
This should make everyone think, be you Democrat, Republican or Independent
From a California school teacher - - -
"As you listen to the news about the student protests over illegal immigration, there are some things that you should be aware of:
I am in charge of the English-as-a-second-language department at a large southern California high school which is designated a Title 1 school, meaning that its students average lower socioeconomic
and income levels.
Most of the schools you are hearing about, South Gate High, Bell Gardens , Huntington Park , etc., where these students are protesting, are also Title 1 schools.
Title 1 schools are on the free breakfast and free lunch program. When I say free breakfast, I'm not talking a glass of milk and roll -- but a full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make a Marriott proud. The waste of this food is monumental, with trays and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten. ( OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK )
I estimate that well over 50% of these students are obese or at least moderately overweight. About 75% or more DO have cell phones. The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage pregnant girls (some as young as 13) so they can attend class without the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters or having family watch their kids. (OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)
I was ordered to spend $700,000 on my department or risk losing
funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for anything; my budget was already substantial. I ended up buying new computers for the computer learning center, half of which, one month later, have been carved with graffiti by the appreciative students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free education in America . (OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)
I have had to intervene several times for young and substitute teachers whose classes consist of many illegal immigrant students here in the country less then 3 months who raised so much hell with the female teachers, calling them "Putas" whores and throwing things that the teachers were in tears.
Free medical, free education, free food, day care
etc., etc, etc. Is it any wonder they feel entitled to not only be in this country but to demand rights, privileges and entitlements ?
To those who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE their gardener and housekeeper and they like to pay less for tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the TRUE costs.
Higher insurance, medical facilities closing, higher medical costs, more crime, lower standards of education in our schools, overcrowding, new diseases etc., etc, etc. For me, I'll pay more for tomatoes.
We need to wake up. The guest worker program will be a disaster because we won't have the guts to enforce it . Does anyone in their right mind really think they will voluntarily leave and return?
It does, however, have everything to do with culture: A third-world culture that does not value education, that accepts children getting pregnant and dropping out of school by 15 and that refuses
to assimilate , and an American culture that has become so weak and worried about " politically correctness" that we don't have the will to do anything about it.
If this makes your blood boil, as it did mine, forward this to everyone you know.
CHEAP LABOR? Isn't that what the whole immigration issue is about?
Business doesn't want to pay a decent wage.
Consumers don't want expensive produce.
Government will tell you Americans don't want the jobs.
But the bottom line is cheap labor. The phrase "cheap labor" is a myth , a farce, and a lie. There is no such thing as "cheap labor."
Take, for example, an illegal alien with a wife and five children. He takes a job for
$5.00 or 6.00/hour. At that wage, with six dependents, he pays no income tax, yet at the end of the year, if he files an Income Tax Return, he gets an "earned income credit" of up to $3,200 free.
He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent.
He qualifies for food stamps.
He qualifies for free (no deductible, no co-pay) health care.
His children get free breakfasts and lunches
at school.
He requires bilingual teachers and books.
He qualifies for relief from high energy bills.
If they are or become, aged, blind or disabled, they qualify for SSI. Once qualified for SSI they can qualify for Medicare. All of this is at (our) taxpayer's expense .
He doesn't worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance.
Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material.
He and his family receive the equivalent of $20.00 to $30.00/hour in benefits.
Working Americans
are lucky to have $5.00 or $6.00/hour left after paying their bills and his.
The American taxpayers also pay for increased crime, graffiti and trash clean-up.
Cheap labor? YEAH RIGHT! Wake up people!
THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS WE SHOULD BE ADDRESSING TO THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR EITHER PARTY. 'AND WHEN THEY LIE TO US AND DON'T DO AS THEY SAY, WE SHOULD REPLACE THEM AT ONCE!'
WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE,
ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE

ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE

Why am I Here

Why am I Here
I have been here for about 1 ½ years and have seen a decline in business from 4 million annually with 40 – 50 employees to 1 ½ million in 2007 with 20 employees. The extremely despairing issues are that the overhead has not decreased in proportion. We have 6 family members, 2 engineers including myself, a receptionist, and a maintenance man on the payroll that is all overhead or non production. That is ½ of the employees but about ¾ of the payroll. Of the 10 people in the plant 2 are in the tool room (some of their time is paid production and some is non-paid tool maintenance) and 7-8 people in the plant that is in production, these are mostly Mexicans making an average of $7.00 hour and they have the burden of producing enough product to support the rest of us.
We are very top heavy but there is a problem. They are not going to let any of the family go and they need the rest of us to keep the plant running. Besides the out-of-proportion of overhead employees to production employees we have a large facility to maintain. No way can the sales be covering the overhead. Last year we lost (or didn’t get) a million dollar contract because of lack of organization. We now have a meeting pending with Batesville Casket Company that is another million dollar job. That are requiring the same quality requirements that we didn’t provide for the Ice Machine Company. We are preparing for another horse and pony show for them hoping that they don’t look in depth at how we really do thing. We received this e-mail laying out the meeting agenda. Again I am repeating myself but I have setup all that they are requiring but none has been put into action. They will eventuality have to make some hard decisions. I Hope that I can hold on until I am ready to leave for school. If we get Batesville then I will be secure till then. They will need me to get the design work done.

Starting School in February
I talked to the school (Tennessee Tech @ Nashville) yesterday and was told by admission that I was number 5 on the list and that I would be in the February 25th class. I go for orientation on February 8th. I am really looking forward to getting started.
This is my 4th day on my diet. I started the Alli capsules today. I have been staying slickly with the plan. It has not been easy but it is manageable. I will weigh next Sunday and see if anything has changed yet. I don’t have a lot of expectations for one week. I did seem to get into my tight jeans a little easier this morning but of course that might be because of lack of food.
I have changed to a low fat creamer for my coffee and I drink tea during the day. Shelly has been creative in fixing meals and that helps. It is mainly proportion control (elf food) and low fat. I can have a lot of vegetable so that I can live with and again Shelly does a great job of making them good to eat by spicing them. Her Cajun background comes in handy. Learning to cook and making it desirable without adding fat takes some imaginative but it is the secret to success. I love salads but again keeping them low fat is a problem. I am not a large red meat eater so that helps. I love fish and seafood and have learned to like chicken. Fried is out but I can bake some mean fish.
We are having pecan crusted grouper tonight. I am fixing it by coating of it with egg whites and rolled in pecan meal and baked. I add some salt, pepper, and garlic. Another way of fixing it and chicken is rolling it in corn flake crumbs. You can also use low fat ranch dressing to coat them with. Bake at 350 F. Another item is stir fry. You can use vegetables, scrimp or chicken, and a small amount of boiled rice. Be sparing on the oil. Coat pan with Pam and add a small amount of olive oil. I use frozen vegetable but let them thaw and drain before cooking. I don’t like to overheat the olive oil.

A Divided American
New Hampshire Primary Day. If you think that anything in this country is going to improve whether the conservatives or the liberals get in then you are sadly mistaken. It hasn’t happened and it won’t. As long as they keep us fighting among ourselves as to whom to put in office then we will continue to take it up the ass by both parties. The only solution is to first get control of the government. Get it back into the hands of the people and out of the hands of special interest groups. Anyone that believes that the politicians’ listens to the voters (other than just before an election) instead of the lobbyist with suitcases of money doesn’t understand human nature or politics. The power follows the purse. If we stop the money from lobbyist and corporations and make it so that only the voters can donate money to a politician you will see change. This will return the power back to the voter. Keep those donations to a max of $1000. A $1000 won’t buy favors in Washington. Do this and see how quick the politicians start listening to the voter.
The politics in Washington today has become so divided that compromise in a word used only in a context to degrade the opposition for not flexing to the desire of the one using the word. Compromise is plural but is being use only in the singular. But the government is reflective of the people.
This country has become so divided that having a civil discussion on politics is about impossible. We are bombarded with radio talk shows that use the terms liberal and conservative in a derogatory way. They inflame the listener and increases their ratings but serve no valuable propose. We understand these meaning as well as if an ethnic slang had been used. A meaningful debate can not be had without respecting the opposing opinion. We need to show the same respect in a political debate that we would in any other if we truly care about getting our point across. We should let the politicians and the talk show hosts know that even if we agree with them in principal we do not care for the rhetoric. We must take the high road on the way we treat each other. It is unacceptable to use ethnic slangs and it should be as unacceptable to use any word meant to be derogatorily. It is unproductive and only serves to make everyone feel worse including you.
Let’s stop the nastiest that has become such a way in this country. Let’s make it a better place to live and work and a kinder environment for our children.

Barbara's Not So Good

Barbara's Cedar House Restaurant
I was real disappointed with my dinning experience at Barbara’s. The restaurant was very beautiful, built with southerner red cedar inside and out. The owners obvious had some great ideas and experience in building but that is was it ended. The real disappointment began with the service. The restaurant would probable sit 200 or more but only had about 30 people while we were there. There was one server and he seemed to lack experience. The owners sit on their behinds while he did all the work. He was slow in getting us our menus and then taking our orders. We had to wait on our drinks and salads. They evidently weren’t anymore prepared in the kitchen because it took forever to get served our food. All the while the owners sit at the bar drinking beer, seldom attending to customers or even sitting guest. The server did it all including running the cash resister. The food was mediocre and with a limited menu to chose from. The food was overpriced for the quality. The pricing would have been justified if the food and service had matched the beauty of the place. I don’t believe they have a clue on running a restaurant. If they place ever got full it would be a disaster. There are too many good eating places to choose from to go back to Barbara’s.
I started my diet Sunday. Today is the second day. I did okay yesterday until late yesterday. Today hasn’t been too bad. Shelly has been managing the food so all I have to do is follow it. That’s not hard except I do get hungry. On the Alli program you go a few days before you start on their pills to get the fat out of your diet. When you start taking the medication it has it’s built in incentive to not take in too much fat. It blocks about 25% of the fat intake so if you take in too much fat it can have unpleasant results as it is passed through.

Barbara's Cedar House Restaurant
Friday at last. We are going to try out a new restaurant tonight. It is Barbara's Cedar House Restaurant. I have heard good things about it. It’s on Center Hill Lake at Johnson’s Chapel.
I have been really down today. I guess it is part post Christmas blues and being back at work at a job that I dislike so much. Anyway I will get over it.
The weather is warning up so I will be working on the house this weekend.
I am starting a diet Sunday. It is either loss weight or buy clothes. I am at 215. This is the largest that I have ever been. I am going on the Alli thing. I will keep you informed as to what I think of it. I have never dieted before and I am not much into medication. Shelly is going on it with me. Her goal is to loss 10 lbs, mine is 38 (177; my idea weight according to the plan) so I will be own my own for the most of it.

3° This Morning. Burrrrrrrrrr!

3° This Morning. Burrrrrrrrrr!
Yesterday I called Tennessee Tech @ Nashville and spoke with Gary Warren to check on my status in starting the January class. It is pretty much decided that I won’t make it for this class. They have selected the students from the waiting list and it didn’t get to me. I was instructed to call next week to check on my status for the next class starting February 25th. He was confident that I would make that class but said that admissions would have to confirm it. I still have things to get done to my house before I go on the road so I am not concerned about the wait but I do want to get started. If I can’t get into that class then I will go to plan B (go to a different school). I don’t really want to do that. This school will work best for me. I go for 7 weeks instead of the 3 weeks of other schools and I go for 6 hours a day instead of the 10 hour days of a boot camp school and I don’t have to leave home to do it.
My current job. In our production meeting yesterday the owner was reviewing 2007 and what we needed to change to improve in 2008. We had a very bad year. One of the items was to set up a quality assurance program. Last year we had scraped over $150,000.00 in bad parts. These were only the major scraps that were obvious since we have nothing to track anything. It didn’t include all the smaller rejected parts that could have been avoided that probable added another $25-$50.000. That is extremely large considering that we only did 1 ½ million in sales for 2007. We also lost a million dollar job because we didn’t have a Q.A. program in place. I had set up a program that was going to start at the beginning of 2007 (one of the first things that I did when I started here) but it was overruled because it was too expensive to hire a quality assurance person. It also required the training of someone to enter data into a database program (it would track time and quality) that I had written that controlled the system. I was told that there wasn’t enough for them to do and that the operators controlled their own quality while they ran the parts. We are talking Mexicans that don’t speak English and some cannot read or write even in Spanish. I stated that we could not afford not to have one even if they sit half the time they would more than pay for themselves.
Then the company was trying to sell their services to an ice machine manufacture and they used the paper work that I had produced to show them our quality assurance program. They accepted the programs documentation saying that it looked very good but then wanted to see it in operation in the plant. Our company went as far as placing the paper work on each job and trying to make it appear that we were using it but they didn’t fall for it. They flat out told us that we had good plans but we weren’t where we needed to be in our quality program for them to use us for a supplier. They were being diplomatic.
Instead of going ahead at that time and implementing the program they waited and we had another $50,000.00 scrape job that also cost us potential future business. It would not have happened with the program in place. The problem would have been caught on the first piece approval inspection. They still didn’t learn. Now we have Batesville Casket and Hennessey (they manufacture tire balancing equipment) that are requiring the same Q.A program. In our production meeting the owner stated that we could no longer afford to be without a Q.A. program. I couldn’t resist saying that I told you so. That went over like (well you get the picture). Telling your boss that he is a dumb ass in a meeting is not How to Win Friends and Influence People. Not a good career move as if I give a shit. I hate being hired to do a job and then having it undermined by that person because he can’t understand the importance of it. If you don’t want me to do a job then don’t hire me and waste my time.
If you haven’t figured it out, I have a bad attitude. I hate working for nasty rude dumb asses. I can’t wait to remove myself (if they don’t remove me first) from this place.

A New Year

A New Year.
I can’t believe that it is 2008. It seems such a short time ago that I celebrated the new millennium. Time does fly when you get older.
Well I am back at work today after being off for 11 days. The driving class starts today at Tenn. Tech @ Nashville. I am not in it. I will be calling the next few days hoping that someone dropped and that I can still get into this class. If not then it will be the next one. I came in today to a very low work load. The Mexicans that were off for a week before I was are still not back. It’s so quite here today that you would think we were having an immigration inspection. With new immigration laws that came into effect January 1 they will have a harder time getting this cheap help. I hope that it will improve the unemployment rates here. My employer complains about the quality of people he gets. He does get some good people but treats them horrible, yells at them, degrades them, and pays them poorly while shorting them on their time. Then he gets irritate when they quit. That is why they like hiring Mexicans; they are the only ones that will take it. He doesn’t treat his own family much better but they are incompetent to go anywhere else and make anything. They also live in his houses rent free. It would take a lot for them to stand up to him. He is the employer from hell. I hope to be out of here soon and on the road.
Happy new year to all.
